Ντεμπούτο για το Direct2D στον Firefox

Η τέταρτη έκδοση beta του Firefox 4 είναι πλέον γεγονός, με το δημοφιλή browser να φέρνει στο προσκήνιο ένα νέο χαρακτηριστικό που αλλάζει τη σχέση του με το hardware. Ο Firefox 4 beta 4 περιλαμβάνει για πρώτη φορά υποστήριξη για Direct2D acceleration στα Windows. Με αυτό τον τρόπο, ο browser αποδεσμεύει τον επεξεργαστή από το rendering των γραφικών, κάτι που αναμένεται να κάνει τη διαφορά στα πολύ "φορτωμένα" sites.


Όπως φαίνεται, οι μηχανικοί του Firefox δεν είναι ακόμη πολύ σίγουροι ότι το Direct2D δουλεύει όπως πρέπει, γι' αυτό κι επέλεξαν να το έχουν απενεργοποιημένο στη βασική εγκατάσταση του Firefox 4 beta 4. Ευτυχώς, πάντως, η ενεργοποίησή του είναι αρκετά εύκολη. Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι χρήστες θα πρέπει να πληκτρολογήσουν about:config στη γραμμή διευθύνσεων, να δώσουν στο mozilla.widget.render-mode την τιμή 6 και στο gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled την τιμή true. Αν η διαδικασία γίνει σωστά, το Direct2D ενεργοποιείται με την επανεκκίνηση του Firefox.

Βέβαια, θα απαιτηθούν πολλές δοκιμές μέχρι να μπει το Direct2D στην τελική έκδοση του Firefox 4. Το μεγάλο στοίχημα είναι να διερευνηθεί η κατανάλωση μνήμης, καθώς και οι αλληλεπιδράσεις με add-ons που έχουν δικό τους σύστημα hardware acceleration, όπως το Flash 10.1.
