Ντεμπούτο για τον πρώτο Aquasar supercomputer

Πριν από ένα περίπου χρόνο, η IBM ανακοίνωσε τα σχέδιά της για έναν νέο υπερυπολογιστή με το όνομα Aquasar. Ο νέος supercomputer μπήκε γρήγορα σε φάση υλοποίησης και η IBM παρέδωσε αυτές τις ημέρες το πρώτο σύστημα στο Ελβετικό Ομοσπονδιακό Ινστιτούτο Τεχνολογίας της Ζυρίχης. Τα πλεονεκτήματα του Aquasar δεν περιορίζονται μόνο στην επεξεργαστική του ισχύ.

Ο Aquasar είναι εξοπλισμένος με επεξεργαστές της Intel, καθώς και με τους γνωστούς Cell που βρίσκονται στην κονσόλα PlayStation 3. Το χαρακτηριστικό, όμως, που διαφοροποιεί τον Aquasar από τους άλλους supercomputers είναι το εκτεταμένο σύστημα υδρόψυξης που δροσίζει επεξεργαστές και κυκλώματα. Το νερό στους σωλήνες έχει θερμοκρασία 60 βαθμούς και καταφέρνει να κρατά τις θερμοκρασίες κάτω από το όριο των 85 βαθμών. Στη συνέχεια, η θερμότητα του υπολογιστή που έχει δεσμευτεί από το νερό διοχετεύεται στα γύρω κτίρια και τροφοδοτεί το σύστημα υποδαπέδιας θέρμανσης.

Με αυτό τον τρόπο, η IBM έχει να καυχιέται για έναν supercomputer που αποδίδει 10 Teraflops και παράλληλα είναι πολύ φιλικός προς το περιβάλλον.
