Ο Firefox ετοιμάζει έκδοση 64-bit

Οι επεξεργαστές που κυκλοφορούν στο εμπόριο υποστηρίζουν την τεχνολογία 64-bit εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, ενώ τον ίδιο δρόμο έχουν ακολουθήσει και τα δημοφιλέστερα λειτουργικά συστήματα. Σταδιακά, όλο και περισσότερα προγράμματα βγάζουν εκδόσεις στα 64 bits, με τον Firefox της Mozilla να είναι ένα από τα ηχηρά ονόματα που ετοιμάζονται να περάσουν στη νέα εποχή.

Η 64μπιτη έκδοση του Firefox βρίσκεται ακόμη σε πολύ πρώιμο στάδιο και δεν προτείνεται για το μέσο χρήστη. Για την ώρα δεν υπάρχει installer, οπότε η εγκατάσταση δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση. Όσοι, πάντως, θέλουν να δοκιμάσουν την έκδοση 64-bit, μπορούν να την κατεβάσουν από αυτό το FTP site. Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, θα δούμε την 64-bit έκδοση με τον Windows installer στα τέλη του φθινοπώρου, οπότε και αναμένεται να κυκλοφορήσει ο Firefox 4.

Όσον αφορά τον ανταγωνισμό, ο Safari της Apple διατίθεται ήδη σε 64μπιτη έκδοση για το Mac OS X 10.6, ενώ και ο Internet Explorer έχει έκδοση 64-bit. Η Google ετοιμάζει επίσης έκδοση 64-bit για τον Chrome, αν και για την ώρα δίνει έμφαση στην ανάπτυξη της νέας έκδοσης για Mac OS X και Linux και όχι για Windows.

Το βασικότερο πρόβλημα της 64μπιτης έκδοσης του Firefox είναι η συμβατότητα με τα add-ons. Το σημαντικότερο ίσως θέμα είναι το Flash plugin, το οποίο παρέχεται προς το παρόν από την Adobe σε 64-bit έκδοση μόνο για Linux.
