Σκληροί δίσκοι με ήλιο προσφέρουν αύξηση χωρητικότητας, μείωση κατανάλωσης

Η τεχνολογία των σκληρών δίσκων, λίγο-πολύ έχει εξαντλήσει τα όριά της και σπάνια βλέπουμε κάποιες σημαντικές καινοτομίες ή βελτιώσεις τα τελευταία χρόνια από τους κατασκευαστές.


Ο τομέας αποθηκευτικών μέσων της Hitachi (HGST), που πρόσφατα εξαγοράστηκε από την Western Digital, αφενός εξέλιξε πολύ λεπτούς υβριδικούς δίσκους, αφετέρου υπόσχεται θεαματική αύξηση της χωρητικότητάς τους και ταυτόχρονα μείωση της θερμότητας και της κατανάλωσης, μόλις ολοκληρωθεί ένα σημαντικό project στο οποίο εργάζεται.

Η καινοτομία έγκειται στο ότι γεμίζουν τα κενά μεταξύ των platters των δίσκων με (αέριο) ήλιο αντί για αέρα. Το ήλιο έχει μικρότερη πυκνότητα και δε δημιουργούνται στροβιλισμοί στο βαθμό που δημιουργούνται στον αέρα και έτσι, στα μοντέλα δίσκους των 3,5 ιντσών μπορούν να χωρέσουν πλέον μέχρι και 7 platters αντί για 5 που είναι το όριο σήμερα.

Τα οφέλη δεν περιορίζονται μόνο στα περισσότερα platters, αφού με τη χρήση του ηλίου μπορεί να αυξηθεί και η πυκνότητα εγγραφής δεδομένων σε κάθε επιφάνεια, ενώ μειώνεται και η οπισθέλκουσα, η οποία δημιουργεί τριβές και θερμαίνει το δίσκο. Επιπλέον, μειώνεται ο θόρυβος και η κατανάλωση κατά 23%.

Σύμφωνα με την Western Digital, τα πρώτα μοντέλα με ήλιο θα εμφανιστούν το 2013.
